5 Ways to Keep Calm in Turbulent Times

As we know, it’s not easy to keep calm in turbulent times, but being able to stay level-headed under pressure is a critical skill that will benefit you in both your personal and professional life. It increases your resilience, improves focus and performance, enhances decision-making, creates a positive, manageable environment, and can serve as an inspiration or stability anchor for those around you. It’s not something you are born with, but is a learned ability that you can cultivate through practice and mindfulness.

We all experience emotional turbulence at different times in our lives, from illness to fights with loved ones to global uncertainty. And while it may be tempting to bury yourself in isolation and avoid others, it’s actually healthier to extend kindness and compassion to those who are struggling, offer a listening ear, or even just pause and reflect on all the good things in your own life.

When you find yourself churning up, it’s helpful to get grounded and refocus by taking note of the physical sensations in your body. Try closing your eyes and noticing how your eye space feels—is it pinched, dense, or tight? If so, take a deep breath in and out through your nose and notice how the tension melts away. Then shift your attention to the horizon and allow yourself to see the big picture, which can help you gain perspective and find solutions that work.

Another way to get grounded is to turn off the news and instead, tune into yourself. Spend a few minutes each day focusing on your breathing, and listen to some relaxing music or meditate. Just taking a few minutes to slow down and center yourself can help you return to the present moment when you are roiled with emotion and fear.

You can also use the recent pandemic to hone your ability to focus on what’s under your control, and to diffuse negative and irrational fears by challenging them. The key is to be aware that panic is a normal, healthy response to threat, but that it can be fueled by irrational thoughts that exaggerate the danger and underestimate your coping skills and resources. If you can learn to identify and challenge these irrational fears, you will be better able to stay calm during the a crisis, or any other challenging time.

Lastly, you can also take a break from the stressor by removing yourself physically from the situation, or at least getting some fresh air. Go for a walk and just breathe, or listen to some music. It can really help to just get out of your own head and experience the grandness of nature, allowing you to put a stressful situation into perspective.

Remember, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed and scared by the uncertainty in our world. It’s a natural human reaction to the constant stream of news. Whether it’s personal stress or rising living costs, a little turbulence is a normal part of life. But if you use these 5 ways to keep calm in turbulent times, you’ll be well-equipped to navigate the rough waters ahead.
